KIWANIS CLUB OF SEATTLE HOSTS TO HOST SNOWMAN FOUNDATION and MUSICIAN DAVID LANZ DEC 2nd

Seattle, WA – The Kiwanis Club of Seattle invites interested guests to attend their upcoming luncheon, to be held on December 2, at the Columbia Tower Club. The luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m. with a presentation from the Executive Director for the Snowman Foundation, Kathy Fallman Dewalt. She will be followed by a piano performance by local Grammy nominated artist, David Lanz, who will be of 10 artists playing on a dramatically lit stage at the upcoming TEN GRANDS concert to be held at Benaroya Hall on April 3rd, 2009.

About Ten Grands
Ten Grands features 10 grand pianos and 10 concert pianists on a stunning, dramatically-lit stage playing a variety of classical, jazz, blues, gospel, boogie woogie, pop, contemporary and new-age music. Artists play simultaneously, in various combinations and individually.

Funds from the 2008 Seattle concert benefited a dozen organizations, with major grants going to Seattle Music Partners and the Jeanne Ehrlichman Bluechel Foundation. Seattle Music Partners provides after-school access to music to underserved children in low-income schools via instruments, lessons and a place to belong. The Jeanne Ehrlichman Bluechel Foundation is a volunteer program that travels to inner-city schools, offering music education through the Great Composers and their various styles of music.
Proceeds from the 2008 Seattle event also provided funding to the following groups:

Dr. Zirkle joined us for a great lunch and discussed the SIGN project. The Seattle Kiwanis Memorial Fund recently gave $15,000 to help establish a SIGN surgery center in Tansen Nepal.Lewis G. Zirkle, Jr. MDBioApril 25, 2007Lewis G. Zirkle, Jr. MD is founder and president of SIGN (Surgical Implant Generation Network). SIGN, a Washington State 501(c)(3) non-profit humanitarian organization organized in 1999, works to help create "equality of fracture care throughout the world," by providing orthopaedic implants that speed up the process of healing badly fractured legs and arms. Recipient of the prestigious AAOS Humanitarian award and the Kiwanis World Service Laureate (1997), Dr. Zirkle saw the need for orthopedic surgeons in developing countries to have access to modern, orthopedic implants, surgical instruments and training to help the working poor return to work to provide for their families. He founded SIGN to design and manufacture orthopaedic implants and instruments designed for use in hospitals in developing countries. SIGN is dedicated to treating the poorest and often forgotten people of this world by providing orthopaedic training and donating specially designed orthopedic implants and surgical instruments to orthopedic surgeons in developing countries, where 80% of the world's fractures occur. Since 1999, SIGN volunteer surgeons have trained more than 3,000 surgeons in 140 hospitals throughout the developing world. SIGN surgeons use the FDA cleared SIGN IM Nail system on a daily basis. They have treated more than 26,000 poor patients since SIGN's inception.

Purchased as part of The Stranger's 2006 Strangercrombie holiday gift auction, the piece you're reading concerns not one but two worthy local organizations.
The first is Noise for the Needy (www.noisefortheneedy.org), the local nonprofit that annually produces a series of live music shows, the proceeds of which go to the charitable organization of the group's choosing. This year, the Noise for the Needy music fest will run June 5–10 at a variety of local venues, with proceeds going to the group's 2007 beneficiary, Rise n' Shine. To celebrate the alliance, NFTN founder Rich Green purchased this made-to-order vignette, instructing me to use the space to spread the gospel of the good deeds being done every day by Rise n' Shine. His wish is my command.
Rise n' Shine's reason for being can't be stated any better than it is in the group's official mission statement: "Since 1988, Rise n' Shine has been providing emotional support programs, stability, advocacy, and AIDS education for children and teens affected by HIV and AIDS. This includes children and teens who have been orphaned by the disease, children and teens who live with a parent or other close family member with HIV or AIDS, and those who are infected themselves."
When the organization began its work in the late '80s, services were split much more evenly between kids who were infected (typically the offspring of IV drug users) and kids who were affected (typically children left orphaned by AIDS). But as the medical advances of the 1990s all but eradicated "AIDS babies" in the U.S., Rise n' Shine found itself focusing more and more on children "living in the shadow of AIDS"—kids whose parents were suffering and dying, or already dead, from a disease that not only comes packed with all sorts of sexual, social, and moral judgments a kid can't possibly understand, but also brings a slow, merciless decline and death that must be agonizing for a child to behold.
Which is where Rise n' Shine comes in. With a small staff and a corps of dedicated volunteers, the organization aims to fill the holes that having a parent with AIDS can leave in a childhood. "More than anything, these kids just need a home," says Rise n' Shine's founding director, Janet L. Trinkaus. "We try to create a place where these kids can get consistent attention from reliable, healthy adults, who can pay attention to them in ways their parents, unfortunately, no longer can."
Tellingly, the majority of Rise n' Shine's kids are first brought to the group by an ailing parent—typically single moms, who form an alarming percentage of the state's new HIV cases—who likely take great comfort in knowing their kid is getting help working through an extraordinarily tough experience.
Life regularly sends mind-fucks to the people least equipped to handle them, but even the most superficial components of "living in the shadow of AIDS" are uniquely agonizing. Remember how embarrassed you were by your mom's very existence when you were 13? Imagine how you'd feel if she were dying of a disease she contracted through sex or drug use, and you'll get an idea of the complex knot of anxiety, anger, shame, and vast sadness Rise n' Shine aims to unravel in each one of its cases.
When I ask Trinkaus for the story of Rise n' Shine's founding, she smiles, pauses, takes a deep breath, and begins what is clearly a well-told tale, and rightly so.
In the late mid-'80s, Trinkaus found herself "at a change point in life," and embarked on a 10-day solo retreat in the North Cascades to figure out what to do next. "I was all alone, out there in the deep snow, asking myself what I wanted to do with my life," Trinkaus tells me. When an answer failed to materialize, she returned to her Snohomish home, and soon came upon the answer she'd been looking for. "As soon as I thought of children affected by AIDS, I started writing out the plan that eventually became Rise n' Shine."
As she wrote down the components of her would-be program, Trinkaus realized she was replicating the best components of her own childhood. "I went to summer camp, and I wanted these kids to get the chance to do that, too. At Christmas, my family exchanged gifts around the fire, so we do that here with the Rise n' Shine family." But, most importantly for Trinkaus: "I had a lot of aunts and uncles, a wide net of support growing up, and I really wanted to create that for the Rise n' Shine kids."
At Rise n' Shine, these avuncular and materteral roles are filled by the group's small army of volunteers, each of whom spends four hours a week with his or her Rise n' Shine charge. More than anything, the mentoring program helps Rise n' Shine live up to its ideals, as kids who might otherwise be lost in a world of sickness, secrecy, and shame are given regular attention from adults whose only job—for these four hours a week, at least—is to be there, pay attention, and help.
The Rise n' Shine calendar is filled with inspired diversions—the weeklong Rise n' Shine summer camp draws over 100 kids each year, and the fireside holiday gathering remains open to all Rise n' Shine kids in perpetuity. But it's the basic day-to-day support provided by the mentors that makes the biggest difference in the kids' lives. "A lot of these kids literally have no one," says Trinkaus. "If your parent is gone, who do you call when you get your first speeding ticket? Who's there to help guide you through the variety of challenges of growing up? We're here to help kids every way we can, and just providing a regular, stable, supportive adult presence in their lives can make all the difference."
As any volunteer will tell you, the joy of volunteering is made up in large part of the sheer narcotic pleasure of doing something good for someone else. (Want to make that bong hit feel extra nice? Try preceding it with three hours of public service!) But for Rise n' Shine volunteers, the experience clearly goes much deeper.
"I didn't have a father affiliated with AIDS," said Kristine Armstrong, a volunteer mentor for Rise n' Shine for the past four years. "But I had a sick father growing up, and no one to talk to. As a child, you have all these feelings and you don't know what to do with them, and sometimes your family is too busy taking care of the sick family member, and you just need an outside person to go to. I figured that was a way I could help kids in a similar situation."
As for experience as a Rise n' Shine volunteer, Armstrong is shyly effusive. "Let me just say that... you know, the children touch your lives. They're just such special people, and until you start getting involved you don't realize how much you start to love and care for the person that you're matched up with... I don't know. It's just an amazing experience."

She is now a senior studying at the UW who has aspirations for graduate school and a career with the European Union. Gail C. Wolz is a Certified Laughter Leader through World Laughter Tour, a humor therapist, and a member of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. For approximately 20 years, she held instructional and administrative positions at Michigan State University and the University of Washington. More recently, Gail has conducted therapeutic laughter fitness sessions to thousands of people in a wide variety of settings, with a special emphasis on encouraging laughter with seniors. The Kiwanis Cherry Sale fund raiser was another great success. Our club sold 65 boxes and between Auburn, Rainier Valley and White Center we sold another 60 boxes. We sold 22 boxes over the web site to people from around the country. After a slight miscalculation on the shipping cost we still netted over $1200 for our club and $1050 for the other clubs in the division.

Biography
I learned how to program in high school in the mid-1970s on a computer designed in 1962. It had four cubes of core memory each the size of a coffee cup (holding roughly 64K bytes) and two 10-megabyte disk drives each bigger than a car tire. Teletype terminals in the school connected to the computer with a 110 bit-per-second telephone modem. From that point to the present, I've taken a ringside seat and watched technology change with fascination.

The strength, energy and talent of our students and our parents truly shines at First Place. I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about two important groups that are playing vital roles at First Place these days: K-Kids and the Parent Advisory Council.

K-Kids:

So often, our students are the beneficiary of the community’s largess. We were adopted during the holidays by many caring people. We were just treated to a play at the Seattle Children’s Theater. Today, I was able to see the students’ feted as artists in their “Home” exhibit at the Art Institute of Seattle. That came complete with a cupcake reception, by the way.

Knowing how generous others are to us, I felt it was important that our students learn to give as well as to receive. To that end, I formed a charter “K-Kids” Club at First Place in 1999. K-Kids, First Place’s own student-service group was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Seattle. K-Kids is a "student-led" community-service organization, which operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body.
At First Place, the K-kids are all the 5th graders from Ms. Irene’s class. Ms. Irene says: “They just love it. They learn Roberts Rules of Order, how to run a meeting, and they even nominate and elect officers.”
And, the K-Kids are up to some great things.
The Humane Society for Seattle-King County is the beneficiary of the K-Kids this year. The K-Kids took a vote and it was unanimous: they wanted to help animals. So, cats and dogs, kittens and puppies have been showered with warm blankets for their cages and kennels. Dogs have been treated to home-made doggie biscuits, too. A visit to the Bellevue headquarters of the Humane Society was one of the highlights of the K-Kids’ year.

We are proud of our K-Kids and the great work they are doing as leaders and volunteers in the community. We know that this is great preparation for First Place students being leaders today and in the future.

Parents in Action:

At First Place we know that helping our clients means empowering them to help themselves. When families work to make plans and set up arrangements, we know we are teaching them the skills they will need to succeed at home, in the workplace and in the larger community.

Parents are taking an even larger role in the lives of their children with the organization of the Parent Advisory Council. It is a pleasure to see the parents and guardians of First Place students step up to the plate to organize and attend our “Have a Heart” rally for children in Olympia. At a recent meeting of the parents, we had a presentation on Positive Discipline and a dozen parents signed up for further information on how they can integrate this proven technique into their parenting.

Another group of ten signed up to help organize our next Family Night – an open house to highlight the children and their class work. Others were excited about summer and a day trip they will organize to IslandWood, the Bainbridge Island retreat that emphasizes art, the outdoor environment and technology.

Brenda Benfield, mom of two First Place students, has recently come aboard as Chair of the Parents Advisory Council. I’m delighted to work with her, and all the parents, to engage and empower them.

The energy of the students and the parents of First Place is a wonder to behold. I feel very confident that the future will be brighter for all our families due to the time spent with us at First Place.

Museum of Flight President and CEO Bonnie Dunbar
In September 2005, The Museum of Flight announced the selection of NASA astronaut
Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, Ph.D., as its new president and CEO.
A native of the small, south-central Washington rural community of Outlook, Dunbar earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ceramic engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle and a doctorate in mechanical/biomedical engineering from the University of Houston. She held research and engineering positions with the Boeing Co., Harwell Laboratories and Rockwell International until 1978, when she joined NASA as a flight controller. Two years later, in 1980, she was selected as a NASA mission specialist astronaut.
A veteran of five space missions, Dunbar has logged 1,208 hours — more than 50 days — in orbit aboard the shuttles Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia and Endeavour. Her most recent spaceflight was the STS-89 mission aboard Endeavour, January 22–31, 1998. As payload commander on this mission, Dunbar was responsible for more than four tons of scientific equipment, supplies and water for delivery to the Russian space station Mir, as well as twenty-three scientific experiments aboard the shuttle.
From 1998 to 2003, Dunbar served as the Assistant Director for University Research and Affairs at Johnson Space Center. In this position, she was the focal point for the center’s educational and grant programs, as well as its extensive collaborative efforts with colleges, universities and scientific and engineering organizations.
Dunbar’s final NASA assignment was as Associate Director of Technology Integration and Risk Management at the Johnson Space Center’s Space and Life Science Directorate. She retired from the space agency September 30, 2005.
She has been honored by numerous professional societies and universities, as well as by NASA. She is also a recipient of The Museum of Flight’s own Pathfinder Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to aviation or aerospace by individuals from the Northwest. In November 2005, she was recognized as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for her contributions to aerospace.

In addition to her scientific accomplishments and space experience, Dunbar has been a licensed private pilot since the 1970s, and has logged more than 1,000 hours as co-pilot in NASA’s T-38 jets. She owns and is restoring a 1946 Ercoupe light plane.

$5000 Grant Awarded to the Cobb Center
The Seattle Seahawks have announced four Jr. Community Quarterback Award winning grant recipients for the 2005 season, with each winner receiving $5,000 to complete their community-betterment project. The grant recipients were chosen by a panel of six judges, including Seahawks radio play-by-play announcer Steve Raible, Seattle Times reporter Sherry Grindeland and PGA Family Foundation Grants Administrator Anna Gibson.
Through partnership with NFL Charities, the award was open to Washington State high school and college students (ages 13-21).
2005 Seattle Seahawks Jr. Community Quarterback Award Winners:
Yolanda Eng - Key into Cobb, Children's Home Society of Washington Key into Cobb is an ongoing partnership between the Garfield Key Club and the Cobb Center, a transitional home for boys ages 7-15. Throughout the year members of the Key Club reach out to Cobb Center residents by planning activities that foster mentorship and social interaction.
Happy New Year! Yolanda Eng and the Garfield High School Key Club have been awarded $5000 from the Seahawks Jr. Quarterback Award to support their volunteerism at Cobb Center. I am attaching the grant FYI which includes a photo of them at the Cobb Relays BBQ.
